Austin

When Austin, the West Side neighborhood, was booted from Cicero Township and annexed by Chicago in 1899, it didn't lose its independent spirit. Well after becoming part of the city, Austin residents built their own town hall. Germans, Scandanavians and other Europeans others turned the former village into a bustling urban neighborhood of bungalows and small apartment buildings during the first half of the 20th century. As in many other Chicago neighborhoods during the tumultuous '60s, white residents, who made up nearly all the population, began to leave for the suburbs. Beginning about the same time, jobs and businesses left the neighborhood. In a marked demographic shift, by the 2000 census, the neighborhood had become nearly all African American.
