South Shore
South Shore is a mostly middle-class African American community, with commercial strips on 71st and 75th streets and a shopping plaza at 71st and Jeffrey. Once a largely white community, South Shore attempted an unsuccessful program called “managed integration” to achieve racial balance. Although the community suffered some economic decline as it became more African-American, this was mainly due to redlining; South Shore remains a choice destination on Chicago's South Side.
