East Garfield Park
East Garfield Park, four miles west of downtown, was hit hard by the urban unrest of 1968; the population declined and abandoned buildings and vacant lots were common. But powered by the visibility of the Garfield Park Conservatory, Chicago Transportation Authority improvements, and interests in historic homes, both longtime and new residents are growing a healthy community. The area was named Chicago’s “most up-and-coming neighborhood” by Business Week in 2007. Chicago Housing Authority projects have been replaced with mixed-income developments, a number of schools’ academic accomplishments have earned national recognition, and developers are snapping up rehab properties.
