Pullman
Pullman, on Chicago's far South Side, was once a thriving manufacturing district, most notable for its production of the sleeping and parlor cars that were crucial to the nation's rail passenger system. Although the neighborhood fell on hard times following the demise of the rail system, it still possesses the fine brick cottages and row houses previously inhabited by Pullman workers. In 1960, consultants to the South End Chamber of Commerce recommended that Pullman be demolished between 111th and 115th to make way for industrial expansion to benefit the remainder of the Calumet region. Pullman residents successfully fought that construction and the neighborhood was designated a National Historic landmark in 1971.
